Official tasks after moving: what to do and when

New home, new address – and a whole range of places that need to know. Here's what to do first, which deadlines apply and who you shouldn't forget.

The most important appointment first: re-registering at the residents' registration office. It has a fixed deadline and is the basis for much else. The rest can be handled calmly in the weeks that follow – ideally in the order below.

Re-register at the residents' registration office

Within two weeks of moving in, re-register at your new place of residence. You'll need your ID card and the landlord's confirmation of residence. For a family move, several people can be re-registered in one appointment.

Update the address on your ID card and passport

The new address is noted directly on the ID card when you re-register. Remember all family members, including children's ID cards.

Re-register your vehicle

If you move to a different registration district, re-register the vehicle at the new registration office. Within the same district a change of address is often enough.

Set up mail forwarding

A forwarding order with the postal service catches letters whose senders you haven't informed yet. That way nothing gets lost in the first weeks.

Inform contracts and providers

Electricity, gas, internet, bank, insurers, employer: they all need the new address. The quickest way is a list you work through once.

Children: daycare, school and child benefit

Register the children at the new daycare or school and tell the family benefits office your new address. For a school change, early registration helps.

Update the broadcasting fee and store the new address with your family doctor and specialists. Don't forget clubs and subscriptions either.

How long do I have to re-register?

Usually two weeks after moving in. Anyone who clearly exceeds the deadline risks a fine.

Do I really need the landlord's confirmation of residence?

Yes. Without the landlord's confirmation the office cannot process the re-registration. Request it in good time.

Do I have to de-register at my old address?

Not within Germany – the re-registration handles that. De-registration is only needed if you move abroad.
